A Considered Start: 5 Things to Know Before Renovating Your Home

A considered start makes all the difference in your renovation journey

Renovating your home is incredibly exciting. It’s a chance to reimagine how you live, how your space feels, and how everything functions day to day.

But before any tiles are chosen or walls are knocked through, there are a few things I always encourage my clients to think about first.

Because the most successful projects — the ones that feel effortless and truly considered — always start well before the renovation begins.

1. Start with how you want to live, not how you want it to look

It’s so easy to begin with Pinterest boards and saved images, but a beautiful home isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about how it supports your everyday life.

Think about:

  • How you move through your space

  • Where things tend to pile up

  • What currently frustrates you

The aesthetic will come, but the layout and functionality are what make a home feel right.

“A beautiful home isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about how it works for you.”

2. Be honest about your budget (and where it matters most)

A clear, realistic budget doesn’t limit a project — it gives it direction.

There are always areas where it’s worth investing, and others where you can be more flexible. The key is understanding your priorities early on, so the design can reflect them from the beginning.

Without this clarity, it’s very easy for costs to creep or decisions to feel overwhelming later down the line.

3. The timeline will always be longer than you think

Even the most straightforward renovations have layers — design decisions, ordering lead times, contractor availability, unexpected delays.

Rushing decisions often leads to compromises, and those are usually the things that don’t sit quite right once everything is finished.

Allowing time — for planning, for sourcing, for considered choices — always results in a better outcome.

4. Every detail adds up

It’s rarely one big feature that makes a space feel complete. More often, it’s the smaller, quieter decisions that create that sense of cohesion.

Think about:

  • Where switches are placed

  • How materials meet

  • The alignment of handles, lighting, and joinery

These are the details that are easy to overlook at the start, but they’re what elevate a space from “finished” to truly considered.

5. You don’t have to figure it all out alone

Renovating can feel overwhelming — there are so many decisions, and many of them are interconnected.

Having guidance early on doesn’t just make the process easier, it helps you avoid costly mistakes and ensures everything works together from the outset.

Even a single conversation can bring clarity, direction, and confidence in your decisions.

The most successful renovations aren’t rushed or reactive — they’re thoughtful, well-planned, and grounded in how you actually want to live.

Taking the time to get clear on these foundations will shape every decision that follows, and ultimately, how your home feels when it’s finished.

If you’re at the beginning of a renovation and would like some clarity before you start, our Power Hour is designed to give you exactly that — focused, tailored advice to help you move forward with confidence.
