What’s in a name?
The story behind Studio Heim
When I formed Studio Heim in 2021, I spent a long time thinking about what to call the business.
I knew I wanted a name that reflected my love of Scandinavian interiors and timeless, thoughtful design, but more importantly, I wanted it to represent the feeling of home.
For me, home has never just been about how a space looks. It’s about how it feels when you walk through the door. Calm. Comfortable. Grounding. A quiet exhale at the end of the day.
That feeling - of truly being home - is what I try to encapsulate in every design we create at Studio Heim.
1. The meaning of “Heim”
The word Heim comes from Old Norse, where it means “home,” “abode,” “world,” or “land.” It stems from the Proto-Germanic haimaz and is frequently found in Norse mythology and modern Scandinavian language.
Today, Heim is still used in modern Norwegian and German to mean “home,” and it’s pronounced like “hime” - rhyming with time.
It felt like the perfect word to represent the studio: rooted in Scandinavian influence, but centred around warmth, belonging, and the emotional connection we have to our homes.
“Home should feel like a breath of fresh air. Calm, grounding, and entirely your own.”
2. More than just a logo
Even with our recent rebrand, it was important that the identity still reflected the meaning behind the name.
Our primary logo combines a timeless wordmark with an icon designed to feel grounded and evocative. The interlocking forms symbolise connection, belonging, and the balance between individuality and community, echoing the meaning of Heim as both “home” and “world.”
The submark also draws from the etymology of Heim, with its Ø-inspired form acting as a subtle nod to Scandinavian culture and language.
Like a small detail in an interior, it quietly adds character and depth to the identity.
“A home should not only look beautiful — it should feel calm, comfortable, and entirely your own.”
3. The feeling behind the work
At Studio Heim, design has always been about more than aesthetics.
It’s about creating spaces that support everyday life. Homes that feel calm, intentional, and deeply personal to the people living in them.
The circle within the brand mark became a quiet metaphor for home itself: a protected, grounding space that offers comfort and belonging. The gentle diagonal line suggests movement within stability. Life unfolding inside the safety of home.
In many ways, that philosophy sits at the heart of every project we take on. Spaces that are fluid yet enduring. Thoughtful yet comfortable. Refined, but always liveable.
A name that still feels right
Years later, Studio Heim still feels like exactly the right name for the studio.
Because at the centre of everything we do is the same simple idea: creating homes that feel like sanctuary.
Homes that welcome you in, allow you to slow down, and support the life unfolding within them.
f you’re looking to create a home that feels calm, personal, and deeply connected to the way you live, our design services are here to guide you through every step of the process.
